Gaharo Hill holds a pretty special place in Burundi coffee. It’s where the Long Miles Coffee journey began, along with their Coffee Scouts programme — connecting farmers, improving quality and supporting the communities growing the coffee.
Sitting at 1,760 metres above sea level on the northern edge of Kayanza Province, the Bukeye Washing Station was quite literally built by the community. Local farmers cleared the land and made the bricks themselves using clay from the valley below. Today, many of those same neighbouring farmers deliver their best cherries to Bukeye, working together under the spirit of twese hamwe — “all of us together.”
For this natural lot, ripe cherries are carefully hand-sorted before being dried whole on raised African beds for 25–30 days. The slow drying process concentrates sweetness and fruit, producing a cup that’s vibrant, juicy and intensely sweet.
A brilliant example of Burundi specialty coffee, with great coffee and community sitting firmly at the heart of it.
